Supporting the NHS Energy strategy with a range of flexible financing options

We empower the public sector, including the NHS; to turn national decarbonisation goals into tangible results.

Our flexible financing packages make it easier for individual Trusts and hospitals to take decisive action, bridging the gap between ambition and achievement in the journey to net zero.

The scale of the challenge facing the NHS is unprecedented. Local NHS systems in England ended 2023/24 with a collective deficit of £1.4bn, with backlog maintenance an increasing challenge for Trusts. In parallel with the challenges of cost, we are all aware of the need to shrink our carbon footprint. Well-managed energy can be a key component in driving business efficiency and fast-tracking net zero goals. From flexible investment in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) to long-term savings with solar, there are several options that can help the NHS cut costs and carbon emissions, and address backlog maintenance across the Estate. But if you’re unsure how to finance your ambitions—where should you start?

1. Discount Energy Purchase (DEP)

With DEP you can finance on-site generation assets such as CHP over a 7–15 year contract. You’ll pay an agreed p/kWh unit rate for the electricity generated and ongoing maintenance is included.

2. CHP Rental-as-a-service

With CHP Rental-as a Service you can rent a CHP unit for a shorter time period – typically 5 years. There are no minimum generation obligations, so you won’t be charged for under-usage, and you can use the CHP as much or as little as your organisation needs.

3. Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

With a PPA you can finance on-site renewable generation assets such as commercial Solar Panels under a single agreement for 15-20 years.

4. Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) Tracker

With a PPA Tracker you can finance Solar installations under an agreement that tracks non-domestic electricity market rates, so you’ll always pay less for your Solar energy compared to grid-supplied electricity.

5. Zero Capital Investment

Centrica Business Solutions also offers zero-CAPEX options that provide a hassle-free way to access energy solutions, like solar, without any upfront investment. This is fully Centrica-funded, meaning no banks or third parties are involved.
