Town of Henrietta Improves Outdoor Lighting for Savings, Safety, and Sustainability

The challenge:

The Town of Henrietta’s aging exterior lighting resulted in high utility bills and costly maintenance. The Town also faced safety concerns at the park due to outdated systems, which were not only inefficient but also poorly positioned, with light poles obstructing its sports fields. The combined effect of these issues placed a significant financial and operational burden on the Town of Henrietta.

The solution:

Centrica Business Solutions proposed a comprehensive energy performance contract to address the Town of Henrietta’s challenges. Centrica Business Solutions facilitated the buyback of the street lighting system from utility companies, allowing the Town to take control of its infrastructure. The existing street lights were upgraded to energy-efficient LEDs, drastically reducing energy consumption and maintenance needs. LED lighting was installed across all
Town-owned facilities including decorative fixtures, improving energy efficiency while maintaining or enhancing the existing environments. A new LED lighting system was also installed at the town park sports fields, with a redesigned layout that removed light poles from the field of play, ensuring the area met modern recreation standards and improved safety.

The result:

This project has brought substantial benefits to the Town of Henrietta, including annual savings of $26,054 from electric costs and $312,611 from utility service class costs in the first year alone. Centrica Business Solutions also secured $93,144 in utility incentives through collaboration with RG&E and National Grid. Environmentally, the project cuts greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 570 metric tons of CO2e each year—equivalent to taking 123 vehicles off the road, sequestering carbon across 674 acres of trees, or powering 111 homes. The new lighting system has transformed the park into a safer, more enjoyable space for evening activities, while street light upgrades enhanced visibility and reliability throughout the community. With ownership of its street lighting infrastructure, the Town gained greater control over maintenance and has decreased dependency on utilities. Through careful planning and execution, Centrica Business Solutions helped the Town of Henrietta achieve significant energy and utility savings, enhanced safety, and a reduced environmental footprint, setting a benchmark for sustainable community development.
